Pickleball

Have you seen a game of pickleball being played at the Norwich Family YMCA? What IS pickleball, anyway? Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. There is a dedicated group of pickleball players (some might even call them fanatics!) playing on Court 2 most mornings of the week. Several of the players have won medals in the Empire State Senior Games, and some players are starting to seek out other tournaments to play in as well. All of the pickleballers play for the pure joy of the game! After all, how seriously can you take a game called “pickleball”? If you would like to learn how to play the game, just ask one of the players, or stand along the sidelines and wait for a break in the action and ask if you can play.
