Re: YMCA Boilers, Whirlpool Closed and Pool Temperatures

Since April we have been aggressively working to create a plan to repair and or replace our seventeen year old heating boilers that provide heat to the Y building but also the swimming pool too. We have successfully created a plan with our engineers, established a funding plan for this project, and have requested bids to complete this facility upgrade.

While completing the above mentioned tasks, our only operating boiler is no longer able to function properly as it was discharging a heavy carbon output through our venting system, where this emission was being drawn into our fresh air intakes back into the building. For the safety of our membership we have turned off the boilers. We are prepared to replace the aging boilers with multiple high efficiency units that will provide “back up” to each other and meeting our future needs.

The Swimming pool will remain open, but we need to note that the pool temperatures will not be what our membership is accustom too. We will post the current temperature on the chalkboard in the pool area and we will post at the front desk so our members can monitor and decide if they want to use the pool.

As of Friday 6-8-2018 at 6:00 p.m. the pool water temperature is 84.4 degrees.

The Whirlpool will be closed during this time until we get the new boilers installed.

We are working with the companies that have bid on this boiler project so that we can begin immediately with the hopes of minimizing our disruption. At this time we do not have a timeline in place but we are working diligently to expedite this project.

Please note:
1. Unfortunately the Norwich High School is not available to assist us as they are currently in the midst of a construction project.
2. Kurt Beyer pool is not open yet for additional local options.
3. We have initiated a call to inquire about a portable boiler to see if it is capable of working in our building and set up.
4. We will be taking temperature readings of the pool and posting in the pool area and also the front desk.
5. We have printed off Water Fitness and Swimming Lesson rosters so that we can contact the class participants to communicate our ongoing challenge.

Please continue to check our Facebook and Website for updated information.
